9 Common Summer Diseases and Precautions

It’s juuust about summer, yep, even if it rains once in a while — it’s still hot, ohh, hotter! Anyway, while many are excited about vacationing and spending their days under the sun, be careful. It’s better to know your body’s limits and take some precautions.

Here now are the most common summer diseases in the Philippines.

SORE EYES

Sore eyes (Photo: firmoo)

Although this ‘reddening of the eyes’ also infects adults, this is especially common in children mainly because of the less than hygienic nature of kids mixed with the warmer than usual temperature and an abode that is more frequented not only by people but dust and dirt.

Oh by the way, did you know that if ‘sore eyes’ are mistreated that it could lead to blindness? Seriously. Thus, this summer make sure you wash your hands more often to lessen the risk of infection.

SUNBURN

Obviously with our excitement to go swimming and cool off our buuurning bodies, we tend to overdo it. Result. More than just a red skin but a sunburn. Mind you, know what exposure to UV rays bring to our health? Skin cancer. So, it’d be good to start putting sunscreen 30 minutes before going under the sun.

HEAT STROKE

Now speaking of ‘going under the sun’, remember, the hottest time of the day is between 10AM to 2PM. Therefore, try to stay in shades or cooler places during this time. Hydrate yourself by drinking more than just 8 glasses of water the whole day. Hey, 8 glasses is just a year-round average — which should naturally be increased during summer!

Also, try to always use umbrellas or hats whenever you go out. That would help against dehydration and heat stroke.

COUGH AND COLDS

Cough and colds (Photo: World News)

Because of the changing weather (which at times rain despite summer), we are more prone to cough and colds; and so, it would be good if we could have more fruits and veggies in our diet to strengthen our immune system. Yup, not just water.

Otherwise, don’t miss out on your vitamin C and D supplements.

FLU

Worse case scenario, you could get bedridden with a flu should you take your cough and colds for granted — and thus miss out on some bonding moments with family and friends. Hmm…

So. Drink. Drink. Drink. Water. More water. To up your immunity to the next level. And don’t forget to cover your nose and mouth whenever you cough or sneeze. Hey, can’t just bring another summer-excited soul to sick bay with you!

SKIN DISEASE

Prickly heat (Photo: herbal care product)

Prickly heat. Rashes. Boils. Actually, these are the result of not just a hot weather but of improper hygiene. Try to regularly bathe everyday. Wear clean and dry clothes. And when you go swimming, make sure that you take a shower before and after dipping in the pool — especially if you’re not sure of the pool’s maintenance.

And of course, don’t add to its dirt by peeing in it. Okay? There are bathers who may have a weaker immune system, you know.

DIARRHEA

Diarrhea (Photo: skymet weather)

While we may enjoy eating street food, summer is the time to be especially careful on this indulgence. The weather is hot, and at times, unusually hot thus food could spoil faster than usual — particularly those ‘already cooked’ food that we buy, or that even we ourselves have prepared for our summer escapades. See? Even if we made them ourselves!

Worse, some may even be contaminated for whatever reason. So, if not careful, you’d spend more time on the ‘bowl’ than at the beach.

Food poisoning (Photo: News Flash)

FOOD POISONING

Okay, the ‘bowl’ may be a much better place than the hospital which could be due to a summer breakdown like food poisoning. So careful.

RABIES

Rabies (Photo: vital animal)

Especially for non-native English speakers, have you ever wondered what ‘dog days’ mean? Hottest time of the year. Summer. And this term is referred to because dogs usually breathe harder with their tongues out during hot days — that’s why it’s called ‘dog days’!

And during ‘dog days’, these creatures are particularly ‘hot-headed’. Yeah, meaning irritable since it’s hot. Thus, be sure to always give them water and bathe them regularly. Rabies can be fatal. So for assurance, have ’em vaccinated as well. Give ’em all the care they deserve. They too want to feel comfortable, and us, safe.

In the end, what’s the use of summer if we can’t all have fun?!

Simple Facts about Online Shopping

So, online shopping has become more and more popular around the world, eh — what with internet access to most everyone in the planet??! Still, many are either scared or overwhelmed by it; well, let’s then get a quick diagnosis on why such a feeling.

SCARY?

There’s actually a basis for this thought, I mean, being scared and stuff. For one, you’d be kinda paying online (unless they offer C.O.D. or cash on delivery) — like giving your credit card or account details! So it’s understandable. Then again, your peace of mind could come from ‘whom’ you are actually buying from.

And track record has something to do with this idea which especially includes ‘consumer experience’. Like, if the seller has an ‘inexcusable’ record of not being able to deliver on what they have promised then that’s a warning sign. See, legitimacy is more than just having ’em business papers — it’s first and foremost about the ‘experience’.

Anyhow, other revealing signs would also include the size of the company, otherwise, its years of existence. This would tell us if they are just a ‘fly-by-night’ establishment, or a company that would not run away with your money. Such companies have online security protection and you would just have to follow their procedures.

OVERWHELMING?

Now, speaking of ‘procedures’. One who is past the ‘scared’ stage might be in the ‘overwhelmed’ stage, you know. Like, since he is already aware of the seller’s legitimacy, he must then be eager to already purchase. Right?

Problem is.. Money. Ow, that’s a big one. Can’t be overwhelmed without money but depressed. Hehe.

Kidding aside, if money is not an issue then it must be technology. Perhaps the buyer has not tried ‘online shopping’ yet, and so, he’s overwhelmed on what to do — on how to do it without probably getting embarrassed, or making a mistake.

If that’s the case, here are his options: (1) Call or send a message to the seller for guidance. (2) If he wants independent action then do a search on the sellers’ online process. (3) Otherwise, carefully read what’s on the screen and especially take note of the delivery and payment procedures — if it suits him then he should follow ’em.

READY TO BUY?!

Once you are past the ‘overwhelmed stage’ — that only means, you already got an idea on how to shop online. Yes? Wow, this could be addictive. Hey, can you imagine the number of products available?? Thousands! And good quality at that! Besides, not only is online shopping convenient that you don’t need to leave your house, it’s also delivered at your doorstep!

Isn’t that cool?!! SHOP NOW!

In Pictures: Mainit Springs (Cebu)

Have you ever thought that there is actually a hot spring in south of Cebu? Yeah, not only beautiful beaches and falls — but a hot spring, too! Must be over 40 degrees of sulfuric acid if I’m not mistaken.

And where is it? Well, about 120 kilometers southwest of Cebu City at Barangay Montaneza, Malabuyoc, Cebu. Around a 3 hour or so drive.  So here, check ’em out.

To get here from Cebu City, you’d have to start off at the South Bus Terminal — get off Malabuyoc (inform the conductor that you’d be going to Mainit Springs at Barangay Montaneza) then ride a ‘habal-habal’ to take you to the hot spring. These would cost you around P200 more or less; that’s a rough estimate since we actually took the east coast (not the via Barili bus) to get here.

Meanwhile, the entrance fee for the hot spring is 20 pesos per head. However, in case you’re thinking of an overnight stay — there’s none within the spring’s vicinity — so, it’s either you camp out or stay in Poblacion, or nearby barangays or towns.

Towards the left pool

Okay, since the spring is hot, as in hot — if you are a first-timer, you’d probably take a long ritual before immersing in this sulfuric spring. So the trick is to go slow. Try to feel the water first, get used to the high temperature and dip yourself limb by limb. Hehe. Before slowly submerging yourself. Hey, don’t open your eyes — and make it quick!

Shortly, you’d notice your skin has turned red while dirt and dead skin are easy to peel. In the end, you’ll be sort of feelin’ relaxed and reenergized, like having gone to a sauna — perhaps even better — since whatever skin allergies you have would somehow be treated!

T’is more than an experience, it’s healing! Try it!

The Preferred Margarine IS…

There was a time when there was only one margarine in the country, well, as far as I know and could remember at least. And guess what brand it was?

Star Margarine.

Well, of course, we’re not really trying to promote the brand but how could you really talk of something when you can’t even mention the name? After all, we didn’t say it’s the preferred brand, right? Obviously, there’s just a handful of choices to pick from now. So..

image

As Wiki also says, “Margarine can be used for spreading, baking and cooking. And like butter, it consists of a water-in-fat emulsion, with tiny droplets of water dispersed uniformly throughout a fat phase in a stable crystalline form. In some jurisdictions margarine must have a minimum fat content of 80% to be labelled as such, the same as butter.”

But what about nutrition? In ‘foods’ like this, it’s all about the saturated fat and trans fat content. The lower they are, the better. Mind you though, traditional margarine accounts for around 80% fat, so be careful. Read the label. And go slow.

image

Okay not only because of increased competition but also due to practicality, some brands have gone into packing in sachets. Hehe guess it really ain’t that practical, huh? But come to think of it, this kinda packing could be healthier especially if the brand got a higher fat content.

In the end, we buy food even spreads for that matter — for taste! With price and health (surprisingly overlooked) a close second and third. Ahh, really?? So what’s the preferred choice? The finalists are in the middle of the photo..

And it’s brand name has the clue.

Consumer Info: The Confirmed Health Benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar

From honey to lemon to green tea to baking soda.. Another one of ’em vital health drinks is the Apple Cider Vinegar.

Of course, even apple by-products are healthy; so, then let’s check out ACV’s proven facts..

Skin. Digestion. Nutrient absorption. Well, even without science, you’d already have an idea about ’em. Like since it’s made of apple, a lovelier skin would be a given in its consumption. And with its sourness, better digestion and nutrient absorption would be like common sense.

image
Not all ACV's are the same. Choose organic.

As for weight loss, personally, I never really felt that ‘fullness’. Fact is, I became ‘hungrier’, after all, it did aid my digestion. Right? But ‘clean energy’, hmm, probably. Not sure if it’s really Apple Cider Vinegar or regular exercise that made me tire out even longer. Perhaps both.

image
The supposed benefits and uses of ACV

Finally, like what the video rather the research revealed, ACV can kill cancer cells and shrink tumors. Hey, that’s like a ‘wow’! Seriously? If so then that’s an extra line of defense for us..

Just don’t abuse your body!

Food Review: Fried Chicken and Unli-Rice (Chef J)

So, to continue with our ‘affordable’ meals.. We now take on the ever so popular ‘Unli-Rice’ meal package; and this time at Chef J Best of Chicken and Noodles.

This is obviously one of the resto’s bestsellers, the ‘unli-rice’ meal but in the case of Chef J, it comes with unlimited gravy and a glass of iced tea as well..

image

Well, when we first saw the promo, we actually wondered what does the ‘unlimited’ gravy have to do with this meal package? Gravy goes with your chicken, and if you only have a piece of chicken or so — would the gravy then serve as your soup or viand as well?? Haha. So, why ‘unli-gravy’?

Anyway, with a piece of chicken and on a budget, you could normally eat 2-3 cups of rice — so their meal package price is indeed reasonable compared to more popular establishments..

image

And yet their chicken is not really bad.

Yeah, it’s not that dry plus you get to sip a glass of iced tea, too. Yey! See. Fried chicken, for that matter, is basically the same, yep, wherever you may eat at — it’s still just chicken! The only difference is the resto’s ambiance, and the amount of breading or seasoning they put. So.. eating at ‘lesser knowns’ is actually a good thing.

Till next time.. Enjoy!

Food Review: Honey Roasted Chicken (Tiktilaok!)

While it’s natural for people to try and dine at the most expensive restaurant their money could afford — let’s go the other way. The cheapest yet tastiest food your pocket would thank you for!

Our menu for the day.. Honey Roasted Chicken.

image

One of those ‘budget meals’ they have at Tiktilaok! is composed of: a piece of ‘not so small’ chicken and a ‘not so little’ cup of pre-packed rice. Wow, ‘not so’, that’s nice! Hehe.

And of course, with the option of adding more. But in their case, through puso or the ‘hanging rice’ which is priced at only P3 each. Not bad. It’s like buying from the streets, you know. Affordable.

image

Still, and more telling is the taste of the ‘honey roasted’ chicken. It’s just great, we tell ya’. Probably the best, if not among the best prepared chicken meals you could ever taste so far.

Well, it’s kinda sweet and juicy that’ll make you order for more rice.. And yes, chicken, too. Haha.

image

Hmm… One reason should be ’em sauces that you could choose before it’s served for your chicken meal’s delight. Honey. Spicy. Garlic.

Once ’em syrup mixes with your rice, you couldn’t ask for more. Wait, what??

More, please.. Till next time, enjoy!
